Association / CPSA / Critical Illness

Overview

Our CPSA Critical Illness Plan compliments our Disability and Life insurance plans.

Advances in medical technology continue to improve your chances of surviving a critical illness or serious injury. To fund the cost of your recovery you may end up depleting your savings, cashing in retirement investments or even mortgaging your home. The advantage of Critical Illness benefits is that they are paid in a lump sum and can be used however you choose.

  • Smoker and non-smoker rates
  • Up to $1,000,000 each for members and their spouses
  • Optional Waiver of Premium Rider available

Note: You and/or your spouse must be in good health to obtain this insurance coverage. Depending upon age and the amount applied for, additional medical information may be requested. Coverage may be declined or modified.

Eligibility

You can apply for coverage under the CPSA Critical Illness Plan if:

  • you are a CPSA member in good standing, or
  • you are a spouse of a CPSA member in good standing, and
  • you are under the age of 65 and a resident in Canada.

Amount of Insurance

You can purchase coverage from $25,000 up to $1,000,000 in $1,000 units, for you and your spouse, if under age 65.

Lump Sum Payment

The advantage of the CPSA Critical Illness benefits is that they are paid in a lump sum to you and can be used however you choose.

Some commonly suggested uses:

  • Fund alternative medical treatment or medical treatment outside the country
  • Cover the cost of uninsured medical expenses
  • Adapt your home to accommodate a medical condition
  • Supplement an existing disability policy
  • Pay off a mortgage or other debt or continue your retirement or investment contributions
  • Fund job retraining or vocational rehabilitation
  • Replace reduced earnings or fund a move to a less stressful form of employment
  • Fund child care expenses
  • Take a vacation

Benefit payments are tax-free provided you are paying the premium.

What's Covered

The CPSA Critical Illness Plan pays a lump sum benefit to you, on diagnosis of one of the covered conditions. You must survive for a period of 30 days following the first diagnosis of one of the following covered conditions:

  • Life Threatening Cancer
  • Heart Attack
  • Stroke
  • Coronary Artery Bypass Surgery
  • Kidney Failure
  • Major Organ Transplant
  • Paralysis
  • Multiple Sclerosis
  • Motor Neuron Disease
  • Coma
  • Severe Burns
  • Loss of Limbs
  • Blindness
  • Deafness
  • Loss of Speech
  • Occupational HIV
  • Neurological Disorders (Parkinson's and Alzheimer's Disease)

Optional Waiver of Premium Rider

You can further protect yourself by adding the Optional Waiver of Premium Rider to your Critical Illness Plan.

If you choose the Waiver of Premium Rider and you become totally disabled, and remain totally and permanently disabled for at least 6 continuous months, premiums will be waived. Premiums will continue to be waived until you are no longer totally disabled.

This rider is available to income earners only.

Return of Premium on Death

The CPSA Critical Illness Plan includes a built in return of premium on death provision. Should you die within 30 days of the first diagnosis of one of the covered conditions or from a cause other than one of the covered conditions, and where no Critical Illness benefit has been paid, all premiums including medical extras will be paid to your named beneficiary.

Termination of Coverage

Coverage under this plan will end:

  • when the Master Policy is terminated;
  • when the coverage lapses due to non-payment of premiums;
  • at age 71;
  • when your CPSA membership expires;
  • on the date of death;
  • when a Critical Illness payment is made;

whichever is earliest.

Exclusions and Limitations

Some conditions apply if a critical illness occurs or is diagnosed outside of Canada.

This insurance does not cover any loss, or expenses caused or contributed to by:

  • intentionally self-inflicted injury;
