Overview
Our CPSA Critical Illness Plan compliments our Disability and
Life insurance plans.
Advances in medical technology continue to improve your chances
of surviving a critical illness or serious injury. To fund the
cost of your recovery you may end up depleting your savings, cashing
in retirement investments or even mortgaging your home. The advantage
of Critical Illness benefits is that they are paid in a lump sum
and can be used however you choose.
- Smoker and non-smoker rates
- Up to $1,000,000 each for members and their spouses
- Optional Waiver of Premium Rider available
Note: You and/or your spouse must be in good health
to obtain this insurance coverage. Depending upon age and the
amount applied for, additional medical information may be requested.
Coverage may be declined or modified.
Eligibility
You can apply for coverage under the CPSA Critical Illness Plan
if:
- you are a CPSA member in good standing, or
- you are a spouse of a CPSA member in good standing, and
- you are under the age of 65 and a resident in Canada.
Amount of Insurance
You can purchase coverage from $25,000 up to $1,000,000 in $1,000
units, for you and your spouse, if under age 65.
Lump Sum Payment
The advantage of the CPSA Critical Illness benefits is that they
are paid in a lump sum to you and can be used however you choose.
Some commonly suggested uses:
- Fund alternative medical treatment or medical treatment outside
the country
- Cover the cost of uninsured medical expenses
- Adapt your home to accommodate a medical condition
- Supplement an existing disability policy
- Pay off a mortgage or other debt or continue your retirement
or investment contributions
- Fund job retraining or vocational rehabilitation
- Replace reduced earnings or fund a move to a less stressful
form of employment
- Fund child care expenses
- Take a vacation
Benefit payments are tax-free provided you are paying the premium.
What's Covered
The CPSA Critical Illness Plan pays a lump sum benefit to you,
on diagnosis of one of the covered conditions. You must survive
for a period of 30 days following the first diagnosis of one of
the following covered conditions:
- Life Threatening Cancer
- Heart Attack
- Stroke
- Coronary Artery Bypass Surgery
- Kidney Failure
- Major Organ Transplant
- Paralysis
- Multiple Sclerosis
- Motor Neuron Disease
- Coma
- Severe Burns
- Loss of Limbs
- Blindness
- Deafness
- Loss of Speech
- Occupational HIV
- Neurological Disorders (Parkinson's and Alzheimer's Disease)
Optional Waiver of Premium Rider
You can further protect yourself by adding the Optional Waiver
of Premium Rider to your Critical Illness Plan.
If you choose the Waiver of Premium Rider and you become totally
disabled, and remain totally and permanently disabled for at least
6 continuous months, premiums will be waived. Premiums will continue
to be waived until you are no longer totally disabled.
This rider is available to income earners only.
Return of Premium on Death
The CPSA Critical Illness Plan includes a built in return of
premium on death provision. Should you die within 30 days of the
first diagnosis of one of the covered conditions or from a cause
other than one of the covered conditions, and where no Critical
Illness benefit has been paid, all premiums including medical
extras will be paid to your named beneficiary.
Termination of Coverage
Coverage under this plan will end:
- when the Master Policy is terminated;
- when the coverage lapses due to non-payment of premiums;
- at age 71;
- when your CPSA membership expires;
- on the date of death;
- when a Critical Illness payment is made;
whichever is earliest.
Exclusions and Limitations
Some conditions apply if a critical illness occurs or is diagnosed
outside of Canada.
This insurance does not cover any loss, or expenses caused or
contributed to by:
- intentionally self-inflicted injury;
- attempt at suicide, while sane or insane;
- committing or attempting to commit an assault, battery or
criminal offence;
- operating a motorized vehicle while the concentration of alcohol
in 100 ml. of bodily fluid exceeds 80 mg.;
- the use of any drug, poisonous substance, intoxicant, or narcotic,
unless prescribed by a licensed Physician and taken in accordance
with directions given by the Physician;
- war and any hazard arising from war or hostile action of the
armed forces of any county, whether such war is declared or
undeclared.
No Critical Illness Benefit will be payable if you do not
survive for a period of 30 days following the first diagnosis
of a covered condition. Refer to Return of Premium provision.
