The ability to earn an income is the most important asset you
own. All you have today, and hope to have in the future depends
on your ability to practice your profession. Should an accident
or sickness impair that ability, even for a short period of time,
the lifestyle you and your family have come to enjoy could be
seriously affected.
CBIA's Disability Income Plan is designed to provide you with
a monthly income if you are totally disabled due to sickness or
accident.
To be considered eligible, you must be a member of the legal profession
or Quebec notary, working full time in Canada and be under age
65.
You may purchase a monthly benefit up to $12,000.00 of Long Term
coverage (payable to age 65 or 71) and up to $4,000.00 of Short
Term coverage; subject to medical evidence. Your benefit can be
equal to at least 50% of your income; subject to the plan maximum,
and provided you personally pay the premium, your entire benefit
will be tax free.
The plan is designed to provide you with an income until the end
of the benefit period in the event that, due to an accident or
illness, and following the satisfaction of the Elimination Period,
you are unable to perform the regular duties of your regular occupation
and are not otherwise gainfully employed.
You could also qualify for a Residual Disability benefit. This
benefit would be proportional to your loss of income and would
continue until such time as your earned income returned to 80%
of its level prior to your disability.
For Lawyers under age 45 a Future Increase Option can be added
to your plan. This allows for you to increase your benefit once
a year without providing medical evidence up to age 50. A helpful
benefit when your income is still on the rise.
Also included with the CBIA Disability Income Insurance Plan is
the Cost of Living Adjustment. After benefits have been paid for
one year, they will be adjusted based on the change in the Consumer
Price Index. Your benefits will not be eroded by inflation.
This is only a brief summary of the benefits available, please
contact your nearest authorized representative or the CBIA for
more details.
